Featured Album Harvey String Duo

Doing more with less, an economy of means--those are qualities that we value in a work of art. In their CD Grace and Peace: American Hymns, the duo of Cassia and Myanna Harvey demonstrate that quality par excellence. In these 12 tracks--all of them standard American hymn tunes--these sisters (Myanna on violin/viola and Cassia on cello) have managed to capture the raw beauty of these songs of faith in what I'd like to call a "minimalistic" style. The playing is superb--spirited, finely tuned, with the cello and the violin (or viola, depending on the hymn) winding their way in and around each other to form a wonderful tapestry of sound. Much credit goes to Myanna who is the arranger in this project. As you listen, you may find it hard to believe that you're hearing only two instruments. There are times when this duo almost mimics the sound of a string quartet, as in Have You Been to Jesus? (Are You Washed in the Blood?) With both instruments playing not only melodic lines but creatively utilizing multiple stop techniques, you may just be fooled into hearing a string trio or quartet! This is a tasty album that I think you'll enjoy! And the good news? The Harveys have also released a Christmas CD, so there's plenty of good listening ahead! (Grace and Peace: American Hymns.
